As part of our company's move towards ever greener production, our packaging will soon be made from Biomass. What will this mean for you? What's in it for you? In this short article, we answer these questions.

What is Biomass?

Biomass is all organic matter of plant or animal origin.

There are several forms of biomass energy:

  • Biofuels for transport (produced mainly from cereals, sugar, oilseeds and waste oils)
  • Home heating (wood-fired)
  • Combustion of wood and waste in power plants to generate electricity, heat or both.

In our case, we're using plant biomass, whose special characteristics will enable us to create new, eco-responsible packaging.

How do we proceed?

This responsible and innovative solution for the planet enables us to replace the fossil material styrene with biomass.

The collected green waste is then reduced to oils and refined into molecules (microbeads). Then the process is the same as for polystyrene: these microbeads are injected with steam into the molds of our packaging. Thanks to the steam, the microbeads expand, occupying all the space inside the mold, and weld together to form a new, responsible packaging.

What's in it for the planet?

Thanks to this system of reusing green waste, we can intervene on several levels:

  • We use green "waste", which will be incinerated in the conventional sorting circuit.
  • We participate in the Circular Economy of natural resources. The circular economy is recognized and validated by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. This UK charity was established in 2009 and aims to inspire a generation to rethink, reconceptualize and build a positive future through the circular economy framework.
  • This 100% solution can be recycled in the usual channels with a collection initiative launched in the south-east of France which will subsequently be rolled out throughout France: Collection directly from professionals (trade, industry, professional users with EPS waste).
  • This is a low-carbon solution. In fact, we reduce CO2 emissions by at least 30%
  • Last but not least, there's the forthcoming certification for the use of biomass, issued by the TIV, (Technical Inspection Association). This German organization works to validate and certify products of all types to protect the environment and human health.
